Unique Personalities in Team Development

I was privileged to be the guest speaker at the CMI's May meeting of their London Peer Learning Group to share my thoughts on 'Unique Personalities in Team Development'.

I often hear from clients that they are struggling to manage 'difficult' people in their team which is impacting on performance and there was a similar feeling from those delegates attending LPLG.

The premise of my talk was to challenge the conventional thought process that people are difficult but rather that they are merely different. With this mindset you are better placed to be a more effective manager by forming connections and working relationships with people to the benefit of team performance and business results.

By using the Insights Discovery model I demonstrated that we all have a blend of colour energies and behavioural preferences that make us unique and this acts as a filter which influences how we perceive others and the world around us.

Using this knowledge, I believe managers should adapt their behaviour to suit the different styles of their team members which is key to influencing performance and improving team effectiveness.

Therefore the 4 steps to team effectiveness are:-

1. Explore and discover more about yourself.

2. Learn how to recognise and appreciate others' differences.

3. Learn how to adapt your behaviour to interact more effectively with others.

4. Take action and put your learning into practice.
